In this talk we give a constructive proof of Higman's lemma for strings generated over a finite alphabet enabling us to construct and characterise functions which bound the lengths of bad sequences. These bounding functions are described by ordinal-brecursive definitions and their characterisation is achieved with reference to known ordinal-recursive hierarchies of numbertheoretic functions.-A
